“He’s not so bad, lady.” Angela’s defending Leo. “He’s easy on the eyes too.” She winks at me. “Single, last I heard.”

“Good for him,” I grumble. Except when I make that snide little remark, part of me is glad to hear it.

No, Mabel. Adding a man into your craptastic life isn’t the way to go.

“He told me to hang on to the mac and cheese in case you came back.”

“He did?” Well, that was nice of him. I guess. No. I’m not going to forgive or excuse him. Although, he didn’t do anything truly terrible. Telling me not to “beg” isn’t that bad, but it just stung because I thought I was being adorable. Guess not.

“He did.” I watch her add chicken strips into the box, making sure she gives me three good ones. There’s nothing worse than opening a box up to find three spindly little chicken strips. Am I right?

“Dipping sauce?”

“Ranch, please.” I don’t actually dip my chicken in anything. I save those packets in the off chance I make a salad at home or cut up some celery.

I snort at those thoughts.

Like I’m going to eat vegetables. Especially celery. Ick.

With food in hand, I bypass the wine. I’ve been drinking way too much. They say it takes six weeks to develop a habit, and I’m on week four. If I stop now, I’ll be in good shape. Maybe if I only drink every other night…

The other habit I need to break is stopping at Parker’s altogether. My black pants are getting tighter, and my bank account is shrinking little by little. I need to save so I can keep the house standing. Literally.

Sighing, I shoot off a text to my bestie. “I’ve had the day from hell. Let’s talk tonight.” Even though she doesn’t respond right away, I know I’ll hear from her at some point in the evening. I can always count on Misty.

I get back into my car and head east out of Savannah to Isle of Hope. To the house I love but don’t think I can keep because I don’t have the time, skills, or honestly, the money to fix it like it deserves.
